Sandtray & Play Therapy

When your child can’t find the words…

Sometimes, a child’s world feels confusing, overwhelming, or scary, but they don’t have the words to tell us why.

Their behavior changes, big emotions seem to come out of nowhere, and school mornings get harder. A child who once seemed carefree is now withdrawing, acting out, or insisting everything is “fine.”

When children don’t yet have the language to express how they are feeling, those feelings come out through behavior instead. This might be seen in meltdowns, shutting down, trouble sleeping, difficulty focusing, or sudden anxiety about things that once felt easy.

You want to help.

As a parent, you can sense that something isn’t right.

You just don’t always know how to reach them.

When words aren’t enough…

Children naturally communicate through play.

Long before they can explain their thoughts and feelings, they show us their inner world through imagination, storytelling, and the way they interact with the world around them.

Play therapy provides a space where the child’s natural form of communication is encouraged and understood.

Instead of asking questions they may not know how to answer, children are given room to express themselves in the ways that feel familiar to them.

One way we do this is through sandtray therapy.

A world can be built in the sand.

In sandtray therapy, children are invited to create scenes in a tray of sand using small figures, including people, animals, mythical creatures, landscapes, and other objects.

To a child and the outside observer, it may simply look and feel like play.

But through the worlds they create, children often begin expressing experiences, worries, and emotions that they haven’t been able to verbalize.

A peaceful scene at home.
A fire surrounds a lone animal.
A group of warriors battling a dragon.
Characters that tell their story of feeling calm, scared, lonely, or brave.

Each scene they create tells a story.

Through these stories, we begin to understand what your child may be experiencing beyond their behaviors.

A session with clinician Christian Arbogast may look like this.

Your child enters the playroom, a calm and welcoming space where curiosity and imagination are encouraged.

They may simply sift their hands through the sand, carefully place figures, or act out emotions through play.

There is no pressure placed on them to explain everything or to do anything “the right way.”

Sometimes, children talk about the world they’ve created.

Sometimes, the play itself becomes the conversation.

My role as the therapist is to gently meet them where they are, helping them feel safe enough to explore feelings, process experiences, and make sense of what’s happening on the inside.

Over time, the sandtray becomes a safe space where their difficult emotions can be expressed, honored, and transformed.

Emotions in your child begin to shift.

As children begin expressing what has been bottled up for so long, many parents notice meaningful shifts.

The big feelings that once appeared overwhelming become easier for children to manage.

They may start talking more openly about their emotions.

School begins to feel less stressful.

And friendships and relationships may become easier to navigate.

Most importantly, children regain confidence in themselves and feel safer in the world.

And as that happens, the child you know, the one who laughs, explores, and connects, often begins to shine through again.

You don’t have to figure this out alone.

If your child is struggling and you aren’t sure how to help, you’re not alone.

Sometimes, children simply need to be met where they are and need to use a different language to express what’s happening for them.

Sandtray and play therapy can create that language.

If this approach could help your child, I invite you to use the form below to schedule a consultation. We can talk about what your child may be experiencing and how therapy may support them.
